We were so elated to have realized our dream of buying a villa in a small complex overlooking the sea. Only to systematically be crushed by the zombies who came out enmasse to try to make us as miserable as they apparently are. The entitled, negative Karens of the world with no life who don't appreciate their blessings of a lifestyle most people only dream of, sit by windows and on patios watching and judging others. Ready to pounce.

They complain and propose rules and bans which they garner support for from all the other Karens and sadly represent a majority vote sometimes. They take away freedoms of full grown adults who apparently can't even be trusted to have a charcuterie board and wine at the pool. No, a Karen will rush out to make sure you're using plastic cups and know the rules.

Peace, happiness and fun are not allowed. When we began not looking forward to spending time there, sadly we knew it was time for a change. We won't allow others to ruin paradise for us.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, tips etc. Happy to see a fellow human without a stick up their arse here.

Sad to hear this is so many people’s reality. Move to paradise and ruin paradise for everyone else. Keep fighting the good fight of love and positivity!!

Simo, your blog about driving thru Mexico helped us a bunch in getting here to Placencia. However, I have to say in my 2 months here now full time, in addition to our 10 years of continuous travel here on scouting missions, I have only met one or possibly two individuals who meet the perspective you draw of Expats here in Belize. In fact I believe 98% are courteous, helpful and friendly.

In fact, most of the people I have met are gracious and wonderful

IMHO 🤷🏼

Hey Peter, I'm glad my Mexico story helped; thanks for sharing that!

No doubt, it's a small cohort of people that fits the description of 'the angry expat.' Belize was definitely testing us at that point in our tenure here. We've overcome some significant challenges with our move since then - encounters with grumpy foreigners being one of them. We've also met a lot of great people here - far more nice ones than grumps.

Are you in Belize full-time now?

Really autocorrect? Deplore. Hah! Anyway, I've only been here a month and I see all this behavior. I'm so glad we've found a great community of friendly folks to take us in!

We are moving to corozal this year. This type of truth doesn't scare me! It just sounds like where we live now in the states. Unfortunately those negative unhappy assholes live everywhere. I usually just tell them to fuck off.

Yeah, it's definitely a shame. Many people move abroad a bring lots of baggage with them, literally and figuratively. It's a good idea to sort out your own shit beforehand, so you can better navigate other people's once your here, LOL. Thanks for reading and commenting, dude! Appreciate your support as always.

We’ve been here in the Cayo for over 4 years now, in an expat community. Paradise has soured a bit for us as some former “friends and neighbours” have sided with the developer in his attempt to push his financial responsibilities for his unsold lots onto the owners.

Thankfully, over our desire to find out what our legal rights and responsibilities are, we’ve come to realize that his rants and hissy fits are toothless. We pay “our fair share” for community maintenance and refuse to subsidize him any further. But it’s sad to see people take sides.

Yet another version of people trying to force their world view on others without taking into consideration the legal philosophy (or sometimes even the laws) of the country they moved to.

Hi Joanne, thanks for reading, subscribing and leaving your thoughts. Its a real shame. Bad actors are often crafty at recruiting others to push their agenda. There is a real lack of contentment my many foreigners and they insist on projecting that onto others.

I've heard that. Though honestly, I haven't met anyone in my community who is not happy being in Belize (of course, we all need to get over culture shock but our neighbours and sites like yours help with that). Some of our friends here have chosen to sell and buy elsewhere in Belize (or go home), mainly because they could not tolerate the machinations of the developer. That is sad. It's important, I've found, to find that sub-community of like-minded people and get strength and support from them. That's what we've done.

Yes no doubt. We like it here too. Don't regret coming here. We had some challenges and almost left but recently decided to stay.

How do I leave comments going forward? I got an email with a verification code but nowhere to leave it. I tried logging in only to be told that my handle had already been taken (by me, when I logged in earlier today).
